Paul Harris founded the first Rotary club in 1905 in Chicago.
He wanted to organize a club that would bring together a group of business and professional leaders. These men wished to recapture the friendliness and comradeship of the small town life many of them had known as youngsters. Paul Harris named the organization, “The Rotary Club” because members met in rotation at their various places of business. Membership grew so rapidly they began to meet each week for lunch. This was the beginning of the weekly Rotary meetings now held all over the world.
There are approximately 29,000 clubs in 160 countries and geographical regions, with a membership of 1.2 million. The Fargo-Moorhead AM Rotary Club was formed in March 1990. The club has grown steadily but carefully. Time has proven that new members cannot be added too rapidly to Rotary.
Each member should realize that he or she comes into Rotary as a selected person, representing no individual business or organization – just a classification. They bring nothing with them except their sincerity, personality, smile, fellowship and their willingness to serve. A new member’s first duty is to become acquainted with the other members and club activities.
